Minnesota School of Music Logo

Minnesota School of Music offers personalized piano lessons for kids and teens using a carefully selected, age-appropriate curriculum. Rated the #1 piano lessons in Blaine, MN by Lessons.com, our instructors are experts in working with children. What's more, we offer lessons on full-size Schiller Concert Series acoustic pianos—the kind the pros use!

Whether your child wants to learn classical sonatina, rock chords, or popular sheet music, our teachers are happy to help them become the pianist they want to be. Their friendly instructor will show them the fundamentals of sight reading, technique, and theory, but they will also incorporate their favorite songs into the lessons.

It is ideal if your child has a piano at home before starting lessons, but they can start lessons with our piano teachers by using an electric keyboard to practice on. Most of our students rent or buy small electric keyboards to practice on at home. We recommend a keyboard that has regular-sized keys and a touch-sensitive response. A touch-sensitive keyboard means if you press a key harder, it will play louder, and if you press a key softer, it will play quieter.

To have the best success, look for the following things in a keyboard:

• 88 keys
• Sustain Pedal (when you hold it down, the sound rings out)
• Touch sensitive keys (when you play harder, it sounds louder; when you play softly, it sounds quieter)

If you want to rent or purchase an acoustic piano, we recommend contacting the kind folks at Jim Laabs Pianos in Roseville, MN. They offer a variety of new and used pianos at affordable prices. Whether you are looking to rent a great starter instrument or purchase an upgrade for an advancing player, Jim Laabs will take great care of you! Tell them we sent you.

If you want to purchase a digital instrument, we recommend selecting one with 88 fully weighted keys and a sustain pedal. Of course, there are several great models available. But, with so many choices, it can be difficult to know which one is right for you. That’s why we work closely with Sweetwater Sound. Their dedicated team of professionals are industry experts and provide top-notch service. In fact, we do so much business with Sweetwater that we have a dedicated sales engineer to help make your experience amazing. Contact Luke Herian today, and you’ll be in good hands.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Our piano teachers understand that every student is an individual, with personal musical needs and goals. We make it a priority to tailor how we teach and what we teach to each student’s individual needs.

If you enroll here for piano lessons, your child’s teacher will ask them about their favorite type of music, and set goals to help them accomplish whatever musical aspirations they have. Together, we will develop a plan to achieve your goals! We love beginners, so even if you don’t know where to begin, we can help!

We teach all styles from rock, pop, jazz, country, worship, blues and classical. We combine the important fundamentals with the music you want to play. With all of the teachers at Minnesota School of Music, you are sure to find the best match for you.

Our instructors are highly qualified. All have a college degree, teaching experience, and a passion for teaching. Being a musician doesn’t automatically make a person a great teacher. That’s why we search for the best-qualified candidates who align with our company's values to mentor our music students!

From there, we provide industry-leading training on musical pedagogy, child development psychology, and customer service. We invest significant time and money in our people to ensure our students have a first-class lesson experience.

There is no set answer to how long it takes to learn to play piano. Regular practice can accomplish a basic level of playing in a few months. Most of our students take lessons on a long-term basis because they want to improve constantly, and they find the lessons enjoyable.

You don't have to be Beethoven to support your kid. Music training is a collaborative effort that involves the student, teacher, and parents. To give your child the best chance at long-term success, we offer the following three suggestions for parents:

  • Be present during lessons

  • Check-in on weekly practice.

  • Encourage students to perform

Above all, the parent's primary role is to be present with their child and show them love and support. If you can do that, your child will likely succeed.

For more information on how to help your child prepare for long-term musical success, check out Mr. Nehring's article "3 Tips to Maximize Your Child's Music Training" from our January 2024 edition of The Monthly Musician.
